NATO takes its warmongering chariot to Africa
From 24 to 26 June 2024, the Chair of the NATO Military Committee, Admiral Rob Bauer, attended the US AFRICOM African Chiefs of Defence Conference in Gaborone, Botswana. The conference which was organised by AFRICOM brought together top military leaders from across the continent and marked the first time the United States has co-hosted the African Chiefs of Defence Conference with an African nation and the first time the conference took place in Africa.
Bauer delivered a speech on “security governance and partnerships” in which he focused on NATO’s intention to expand its influence and role in Africa. He explained that from NATO’s perspective, these partnerships enable the organisation to have a better awareness of the situation “in areas beyond its direct neighbourhood” which would better help it to carry out its mission. He further stated that “What happens in Europe, affects Africa. And what happens in Africa, affects Europe”. In addition to his speech to the conference, he also met with the Chiefs of Defence of Botswana, Cabo Verde, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Senegal. Additionally, he held a meeting with the Ghanaian Force Commander of the Accra Initiative Multinational Joint Task Force and US AFRICOM commander Gen. Michael E. Langley.
This is a dangerous development for Africa which shows that NATO is piggy backing on AFRICOM’s neo-colonial presence across the continent with the aim of embedding itself in Africa. This is clearly part of NATO’s grand strategy of transforming itself into a global military force whose role is to defend the position of the US as the sole superpower and to fight against its two main rivals in Russia and China. This organisation is the successor of the colonial militaries which marauded across Africa in the wake of the infamous 1884 Berlin conference with the sole purpose of seizing African land and resources. NATO, itself has its own bloody history on the continent, having launched an unprovoked barbaric assault on Libya in 2011. By the time NATO’s criminal attack had ended, Libya, which was Africa’s most developed country at the time, had been destroyed and the forces that NATO brought to power in that country were literally selling black people as slaves. Now, 13 years after, Libyan society has still not recovered from what NATO did to it.
Betraying the dangerous schemes that NATO has in mind for Africa, Bauer praised NATO’s work in Ukraine and the way that it had ingrained its military culture in the Ukrainian army so that it could better fight Russia. Today, anyone can see the results of NATO’s activity in Ukraine. War has been raging in that country now for over 10 years, having assumed a larger scale since February 2022. Millions of citizens have fled, millions have been killed or physically and psychologically damaged and large areas of the country have been destroyed. This is the future that NATO has to offer Africa. Africans must not allow our people and our continent to be used as proxies by the US in its fight with its big power rivals.
AFRICOM get out of Africa!
NATO stay out of Africa!
